Pelatih kepala Liverpool, Arne Slot, mengonfirmasi pemulangan gelandang Harvey Elliott untuk menjalani sesi pramusim kompetisi 2026-2027 setelah masa peminjamannya di Aston Villa tidak berjalan sukses pada Kamis (14/5/2026).
Pemain berusia 23 tahun tersebut baru tampil sebanyak sembilan kali di semua kompetisi, dengan rincian hanya empat kali bermain di Liga Primer Inggris sepanjang musim.
Manajemen Aston Villa sengaja membatasi penampilan mantan pemain Fulham tersebut untuk menghindari klausul kewajiban membeli permanen senilai 35 juta poundsterling yang otomatis aktif jika ia mencatatkan 10 penampilan di liga domestik.
Akibat kebijakan bisnis klub asal Birmingham tersebut, Elliott tercatat hanya bermain selama 284 menit (sumber lain menyebut 277 menit) di bawah asuhan manajer Unai Emery.
Pelatih kepala Liverpool, Arne Slot, memberikan penjelasan mengenai kegagalan proses peminjaman gelandang muda tersebut yang dinilai merugikan semua pihak.
"I think for him, for everyone, it didn’t work out as he wanted it, as we wanted it and probably also how Villa wanted it, because you usually sign a player or bring him in on loan to use him." kata Arne Slot, Pelatih Kepala Liverpool.
Slot menyatakan kekecewaannya karena minimnya kesempatan yang diperoleh Elliott, padahal sang gelandang sempat tampil mengesankan bersama tim nasional Inggris U-21.
"That hasn’t happened a lot. That’s not for me to answer why that is. But of course, it’s never nice for a player not to make so many minutes, especially after the season he had with us, where he made – I assume – even more minutes with us than these 280." ujar Arne Slot, Pelatih Kepala Liverpool.
Keputusan manajemen Aston Villa membatasi performa sang pemain di lapangan dinilai sangat disayangkan oleh tim internal Liverpool.
"He went over there to get more playing time, but unfortunately that didn’t happen." tutur Arne Slot, Pelatih Kepala Liverpool.
Slot juga mengakui adanya persaingan internal yang sangat ketat di lini tengah tim asuhan Unai Emery.
"And for such a talented player that did so well in the U21 Euros [last summer], you want a player like that to get more and more playing time." sebut Arne Slot, Pelatih Kepala Liverpool.
Meskipun demikian, Slot menegaskan ketidakpahamannya mengenai alasan teknis spesifik di balik kebijakan yang diambil manajemen Villa Park.
"He went to a very, very good team as well, where they also have a lot of good players. I don’t know why he hasn’t made the minutes he was expecting. That’s not for me to answer." ucap Arne Slot, Pelatih Kepala Liverpool.
Menurut Slot, situasi pembatasan menit tampil ini dapat menghambat pertumbuhan dan masa depan karier pesepak bola muda bertalenta.
"But it’s always a pity if a player hardly plays for two years, let alone a player of that age that has shown during the [U21] Euros that he’s such a good player." ungkap Arne Slot, Pelatih Kepala Liverpool.
Slot memastikan bahwa gelandang tersebut akan kembali masuk ke dalam skuat Merseyside untuk mempersiapkan musim baru.
"He’s contracted to us so he will be with us in the start of the season." pungkas Arne Slot, Pelatih Kepala Liverpool.
Sementara itu, Manajer Aston Villa, Unai Emery, menyampaikan permohonan maaf secara terbuka terkait situasi pelik yang dihadapi oleh pesepak bola asal Inggris tersebut.
"To now explain about the reason for this decision is very difficult, or it is easy, but it is not the moment," jelas Unai Emery, Manajer Aston Villa.
Emery merasa bersalah karena keputusan komersial manajemen klub harus mengorbankan perkembangan olahraga sang gelandang.
"Of course, it is something embarrassing for everyone involved." aku Unai Emery, Manajer Aston Villa.
Juru taktik asal Spanyol tersebut mengaku beban moral akibat pembatasan menit bermain Elliott selalu membayangi pikirannya setiap hari.
"My apologies for Harvey Elliott is every day in my mind. But it is [about] responsibility. We have our responsibility and Liverpool have their responsibility." tambah Unai Emery, Manajer Aston Villa.
Emery tidak menampik bahwa dinamika kompetisi musim ini berjalan sangat berat bagi Elliott secara personal akibat persaingan ketat menuju kualifikasi Liga Champions melawan Liverpool.
"It is something, as a human and as a person, how the season has gone has been difficult." keluh Unai Emery, Manajer Aston Villa.
Sebelum bursa transfer Januari ditutup, pihak Villa sempat menawarkan kesempatan bermain dengan syarat Liverpool bersedia menghapus klausul pembelian, tetapi kesepakatan itu ditolak.
"I spoke with him. We have been fair because there are two ways: one way is a sport, the second is business," papar Unai Emery, Manajer Aston Villa.
Emery menegaskan bahwa dirinya secara taktik sangat mengagumi serta membutuhkan kualitas teknis yang dimiliki Elliott di lapangan.
"We'll be fair in case, because we are trying it, and I told him, we are opening the door to play with us, because he can help us." cetus Unai Emery, Manajer Aston Villa.
Namun, kendali atas perubahan kesepakatan peminjaman tersebut sepenuhnya berada di tangan manajemen Liverpool sebagai pemilik sah kontrak.
"But it's not only in my way and on my side. The other side is Liverpool. If they take off the clauses to play matches and for us to buy him, (I said to him) 'You are going to play here with us, it's a sport decision.' But now it's a sport decision and a business decision. My sport decision is still there, 'You are deserving to play, we need your qualities in the field, you are going to play.' But in case the clauses are still there, now it is Liverpool - they have the key." urai Unai Emery, Manajer Aston Villa.
Upaya komunikasi untuk menegosiasikan ulang kontrak tersebut sebenarnya telah diinisiasi oleh manajemen Villa sejak tiga bulan sebelum tenggat bursa transfer berakhir.
"And I told him, it will be fair for him in case Liverpool take off this clause. We are speaking about it (taking off the clause), but not (just) now. We started speaking about it three months ago. Of course, the transfer window finished on Monday." papar Unai Emery, Manajer Aston Villa.
Emery memuji sikap tenang dan profesionalisme tinggi yang ditunjukkan oleh sang gelandang sepanjang periode sulit di Villa Park.
"It will be fair for him, because he's a calm guy, good guy, and he's a fantastic professional. And then his qualities are there," puji Unai Emery, Manajer Aston Villa.
Emery menyadari kebijakan penahanan penampilan ini merugikan sang pemain yang sangat membutuhkan menit bermain reguler.
"Of course, he must play, and he's really being patient. And I know we are damaging him, because we got a deal with Liverpool in the summer and the deal is there, and we are respecting the decision and taking the sporting decision responsibly from my side," ungkap Unai Emery, Manajer Aston Villa.
Ia menutup klarifikasinya dengan menyatakan situasi ini bisa berubah andai manajemen klub asal Merseyside tersebut bersedia melunakkan klausul kesepakatan.
"It can change for him, in case Liverpool take off this clause. If they don't want to, okay, but the player is getting damaged," pungkas Unai Emery, Manajer Aston Villa.
Akibat kebuntuan transfer tersebut, masa depan Elliott kini diprediksi akan beralih ke klub lain demi menyelamatkan kelanjutan kariernya.
Dilansir dari Football Insider melalui Empire of the Kop pada Rabu (20/5/2026), mantan kepala pemandu bakat Manchester United, Mick Brown, menilai Elliott telah menyia-nyiakan waktu satu tahun di Aston Villa dan menyarankannya ke Leeds United atau klub Bundesliga RB Leipzig.
"Leeds want to be ambitious in the transfer market," ungkap Mick Brown, Mantan Kepala Pemandu Bakat Manchester United.
Brown menganggap kehadiran gelandang serang berusia 23 tahun tersebut mampu menghadirkan variasi taktik yang menjanjikan bagi skuat arahan Daniel Farke.
"Harvey Elliott is somebody who could really improve their team. He’s a quality player and would bring something different that they haven’t already got," kata Mick Brown, Mantan Kepala Pemandu Bakat Manchester United.
Kendati demikian, Brown mencatat bahwa jajaran staf kepelatihan Leeds masih harus merumuskan penempatan posisi terbaik bagi sang pemain di lini serang.
"I would have to ask questions about what his best position is – will they play him in the middle or could he play out wide? That’s the issue he has," ujar Mick Brown, Mantan Kepala Pemandu Bakat Manchester United.
Brown menegaskan pentingnya jaminan bermain di skuat utama secara reguler bagi Elliott pada bursa transfer musim panas mendatang.
"After everything that’s happened at Aston Villa, he’s got to get back to playing regularly," desak Mick Brown, Mantan Kepala Pemandu Bakat Manchester United.
