Manajer tim nasional Inggris Thomas Tuchel menyiapkan empat pemain muda untuk melakoni pertandingan uji coba melawan Selandia Baru di Stadion Raymond James, Florida, pada Sabtu, 6 Juni 2026. Langkah ini diambil guna mengantisipasi absennya sejumlah pilar utama menjelang turnamen Piala Dunia 2026.
Empat pemain muda yang disiapkan untuk mendapatkan menit bermain tersebut adalah Ethan Nwaneri, Alex Scott, Rio Ngumoha, dan Josh King. Dilansir dari FourFourTwo, keputusan memanggil mereka dilakukan karena beberapa bintang asal klub Arsenal, yaitu Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, dan Noni Madueke, mendapatkan libur tambahan setelah bertanding di final Liga Champions UEFA.
"We will take some young players out who will train with us in the size of the squad that we need, and we have the two friendly matches to take care of the minutes and the load on the players," ujar Thomas Tuchel, Pelatih Tim Nasional Inggris.
Tuchel menjelaskan bahwa pemanggilan para pemain muda ini bertujuan untuk menjaga kedalaman skuad sekaligus mengatur beban kerja fisik para pemain senior di dalam kamp pelatihan.
"I’m happy to have these players, especially Alex who was on the [long] list of 55 [players for the 26-man World Cup squad] and obviously he didn’t make the first cut but the reaction of him was outstanding and the commitment and wish to be in pre-camp and a step closer to the team was not even a question for him," kata Tuchel.
Ketidakhadiran sejumlah bintang utama memberikan kesempatan besar bagi para pemain pelapis untuk membuktikan kualitas mereka demi menembus skuad final Piala Dunia.
"That showed me his character and I’m delighted he’ll be with us because that was a close call and he gets a chance to get a step closer and a cap," tutur Tuchel.
Di kubu lawan, Selandia Baru datang dengan komposisi skuad yang memiliki pengalaman terbatas di Liga Primer Inggris. Kapten mereka, Chris Wood, sempat melewatkan sebagian besar musim 2025/2026 akibat cedera di Nottingham Forest, sementara bek Tommy Smith dari Braintree Town kembali dipanggil setelah terakhir kali bermain kompetitif pada 2024.
"We want to go to the World Cup to do something," kata Darren Bazeley, Manajer Selandia Baru saat diwawancarai Sky Sports.
Bazeley menegaskan bahwa timnya tidak hanya ingin menjadi pelengkap turnamen, melainkan menargetkan lolos hingga ke fase gugur.
"We're not just there to attend. We want to qualify for the knockout phases. If I'm honest, I'm not sure if it's really hit home yet that we're going to be on that global stage. It's exciting and I can't wait," ucap Bazeley.
