Inter Miami dijadwalkan menjamu Portland Timbers dalam pertandingan lanjutan Major League Soccer (MLS) di Nu Stadium pada hari Minggu, 17 Mei 2026 pukul 18.00 waktu setempat.
Klub berjuluk The Herons tersebut mengincar kemenangan perdana di stadion baru mereka setelah mencatatkan tiga hasil imbang dan satu kekalahan dari empat laga kandang sebelumnya.
Inter Miami saat ini berada di posisi kedua klasemen Wilayah Timur dengan mengemas 25 poin dari 13 pertandingan, setelah sebelumnya mengalahkan FC Cincinnati dengan skor 5-3 lewat dua gol Lionel Messi.
Sementara itu, Portland Timbers yang dilatih oleh mantan arsitek Inter Miami, Phil Neville, tertahan di peringkat ke-12 Wilayah Barat setelah mengoleksi 14 poin dari 12 laga menyusul hasil imbang 2-2 kontra Montreal CF.
Pertandingan ini juga menandai momentum kembalinya Phil Neville ke Miami untuk pertama kalinya sejak ia menukari klub tersebut pada periode 2021 hingga 2023.
Dalam konferensi pers menjelang laga, Neville memberikan pandangannya mengenai perbandingan dua megabintang sepak bola dunia yang berkaitan dengan kariernya.
"I was lucky enough to play with one of the greatest in Cristiano, and on Sunday I’ll be out to coach against one of the greatest, which is an honor," kata Phil Neville, Pelatih Kepala Portland Timbers.
Neville kemudian memuji dedikasi tinggi yang ditunjukkan oleh Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, serta Jordi Alba yang dinilainya mampu mendongkrak reputasi dan atmosfer kompetisi MLS secara keseluruhan.
"I love, and I loved it with the other stars here like Sergio Busquets and Alba, that when they score, they celebrate. They’re not here for a holiday. They’re not here just to pick up whatever money they’re earning. They’re here to win," ujar Phil Neville, Pelatih Kepala Portland Timbers.
Mantan bek Manchester United itu turut menceritakan sebuah insiden kompetitif yang melibatkan Messi saat menghadapi Orlando untuk menggambarkan ambisi besar sang pemain.
"There was a game, I think it was in Orlando, they were maybe 2-0 down, and the greatest player in the world is arguing with maybe the goalkeeping coach from Orlando on the bench," kenang Phil Neville, Pelatih Kepala Portland Timbers.
Neville menambahkan bahwa gairah kompetitif yang ditunjukkan Messi menjadi inspirasi besar bagi seluruh elemen liga untuk selalu memberikan performa terbaik.
"That, for me, inspires the whole league. What them guys are doing shows their hunger, their desire to be the absolute greatest every single day," ucap Phil Neville, Pelatih Kepala Portland Timbers.
Saat ditanya mengenai proses pergantian posisinya oleh Gerardo Martino yang terjadi tepat sebelum kedatangan Messi ke Miami pada musim panas 2023, Neville mengaku tidak memiliki penyesalan.
"I had incredible relationships with the owners, so it didn’t just happen in seven days. At the start of the season, I was under no illusions that probably, if he came in, I wouldn’t be here. And that’s totally fine," jelas Phil Neville, Pelatih Kepala Portland Timbers.
Ia juga menegaskan keterbukaannya dengan manajemen klub berkat hubungan pertemanan yang sangat dekat dengan salah satu pemilik Inter Miami.
"One of the best friends of my life is the owner of the football club, so it’s not as if we kept secrets from each other during that period," tutur Phil Neville, Pelatih Kepala Portland Timbers.
Neville memprediksi pertandingan malam nanti akan menyajikan duel terbuka antara kedua tim yang sama-sama menerapkan skema permainan agresif demi meraih kemenangan.
"You're going to see two footballing sides go hell for leather," cetus Phil Neville, Pelatih Kepala Portland Timbers.
Di kubu Portland Timbers, gelandang Kristoffer Velde mengekspresikan antusiasme tinggi menjelang laga krusial menghadapi sang juara bertahan di hadapan keluarganya yang turut hadir.
"Huge game," kata Kristoffer Velde, Pemain Portland Timbers.
Velde menyadari kekuatan Inter Miami, namun ia menegaskan bahwa moralitas dan semangat juang skuad berjuluk Rose City tersebut tetap terjaga dengan baik.
"We will play against the best soccer player throughout the history of the game. So it will be an interesting game, in their home stadium, new stadium, nice atmosphere," urai Kristoffer Velde, Pemain Portland Timbers.
Pemain berkebangsaan Norwegia itu mengakui karakter vokalnya di ruang ganti sering kali mencairkan suasana tim di tengah situasi kompetitif.
"The team in general, even though we had some tough results and bad moments during this season so far, I think the mood has always been good. We have a good morale in the team, and we keep fighting and we keep working on it," sambung Kristoffer Velde, Pemain Portland Timbers.
Sebagai pemain berstatus Designated Player, Velde menegaskan hasrat besarnya untuk selalu memenangkan setiap pertandingan dengan mengerahkan segala upaya di lapangan.
"We have different types of personalities in this team. I think I'm probably the most loud one," cetik Kristoffer Velde, Pemain Portland Timbers.
Ia menambahkan bahwa mentalitas kompetitif sangat dibutuhkan oleh setiap pesepak bola profesional jika ingin mencapai sebuah kesuksesan besar.
"I don't know. You always need a clown. You always need a guy which does some stupid s--t sometimes," seloroh Kristoffer Velde, Pemain Portland Timbers.
Velde yang mencatatkan enam gol dan lima asis sejak bergabung dengan Portland juga tidak segan menerapkan trik tersendiri demi mengamankan keunggulan timnya.
"I always want to win, and I always use dirty tricks to win – or, I do whatever it takes to win," ungkap Kristoffer Velde, Pemain Portland Timbers.
Gaya bermain Velde yang meledak-ledak dan provokatif bahkan mendapat perhatian tersendiri dari media lokal yang menjulukinya sebagai sosok antagonis dari Norwegia.
"I think that's the part of me which probably took me that far. Because if you're not competitive, you will need to find something else to do. Everybody needs that competitiveness in themselves to reach something and do something great," pungkas Kristoffer Velde, Pemain Portland Timbers.
Velde menilai performa terbaiknya justru muncul ketika ia bermain di bawah tekanan tinggi dari wasit, suporter, maupun pemain lawan.
"We’re going to kill them in May when we play against Miami," ancam Kristoffer Velde, Pemain Portland Timbers.
Sebelumnya, performa provokatif Velde saat babak playoff melawan San Diego FC musim lalu sempat mengundang reaksi keras dari kubu lawan.
"Ask San Diego if I was annoying last year," tantang Kristoffer Velde, Pemain Portland Timbers.
Ia menutup pernyataan dengan menegaskan bahwa kontribusinya di lapangan selalu ditujukan secara maksimal demi kemenangan Portland Timbers.
"I'm always playing on the edge, and I think that I’ve played my best soccer or football when I'm on the edge. And I'm always on the edge to a yellow card, or always on the edge with the referees or the opponents and maybe sometimes my own teammates, I don't know. But I just feel like I need to bring everything to the table to be playing good," tutup Kristoffer Velde, Pemain Portland Timbers.
