Pertemuan ini menjadi momentum bersejarah setelah kegagalan kesepakatan transfer Donovan Mitchell ke New York pada musim panas 2022 lalu.

Kondisi fisik kedua tim juga menjadi sorotan menjelang pertandingan pembuka ini. Tirto.id melaporkan New York Knicks memiliki waktu istirahat selama sembilan hari setelah menang telak 4-0 atas Philadelphia 76ers di semifinal, sementara Cleveland Cavaliers harus memeras energi hingga Game 7 sebelum menyingkirkan Detroit Pistons.
Punggawa utama Cleveland Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell, menegaskan kesiapannya untuk bertanding di kampung halamannya tanpa terpengaruh oleh faktor sentimental masa lalu.
"I’m super excited, I get to sleep in my own bed," kata Donovan Mitchell melalui Dave McMenamin.
Penjaga utama tersebut menambahkan bahwa lawatan kali ini merupakan perjalanan profesional yang menuntut fokus penuh demi meraih kemenangan.
"But at the end of the day, this is a business trip. This isn’t something where I’m here to be like, ‘Man, I’m so excited to be home.’ I did that already. And we lost. So, this is a business trip, and we have to go out there and execute and find a way to win." lanjut Donovan Mitchell.
Skuad Cavaliers juga mengusung misi balas dendam setelah disingkirkan oleh Knicks pada putaran pertama babak playoff tahun 2023.
"We’re here, we haven’t come this far just to be excited to be here. I think that’s the biggest feeling around the group," kata Donovan Mitchell melalui Camryn Justice.
Mitchell menyatakan bahwa timnya kini melihat peluang besar untuk melangkah ke babak pamungkas NBA.
"Now, it’s more so an opportunity for us to go ahead and get to the Finals, and we have to get through these guys to get there." tambah Donovan Mitchell.
Sebelum kesepakatan transfer dengan Cleveland terjadi pada 2022, Mitchell tidak menampik adanya kedekatan emosional serta rumor kepindahannya ke New York.
"Who doesn’t want to be home, next to their mom," ujar Donovan Mitchell.
Dirinya pun sempat meyakini bahwa proses pertukaran pemain dari Utah Jazz akan melabuhkannya ke New York Knicks.
"I kind of had the feeling I was gonna get moved. Like I said, I thought it was New York." tutur Donovan Mitchell.
Di sisi lain, bintang New York Knicks, Jalen Brunson, menyampaikan rasa hormat yang mendalam terhadap kapabilitas Mitchell sebagai rival.
"Utmost respect," kata Brunson.
Brunson menjelaskan bahwa hubungan pertemanan mereka sudah terjalin lama sejak tahun pertamanya berkarir di NBA.
"Got to know him since really my first year. We had mutual friends. The dude works really hard. Loves the game. I think he approaches it the right way so I have a lot of respect for him," ujar Brunson.
Ia juga mengakui bahwa spekulasi mengenai potensi duet mereka berdua terus menjadi perbincangan hangat di media sepanjang musim panas tahun itu.
"That’s all we heard all summer, to be honest with you," tutur Brunson.
Meskipun kemitraan tersebut gagal terwujud, Brunson menilai Mitchell selalu memberikan impak yang luar biasa bagi tim yang dibelanya.
"But I think wherever he’s gone — Utah and Cleveland — he’s made an impact. He has that type of presence," kata Brunson.
Saat membela Tim Nasional Amerika Serikat pada 2023, Brunson menyatakan bahwa dirinya tidak bisa luput dari berbagai rumor transfer yang beredar di media sosial.
"It’s impossible not to see things — rumors and all the stuff that comes up on Twitter and all that stuff every single day is always on TV. There’s always possibilities when you hear about that stuff. Donovan is a good friend of mine for a while. We were in the same high school class, our relationship goes back a long way. I think right now, I’m more than happy with my guys, and i love my teammates," ucap Brunson.
Bagi Mitchell sendiri, bermain di babak final wilayah sebagai putra daerah New York memberikan sensasi tersendiri yang dimuat dalam buku harian digitalnya untuk Andscape.
"Being a New Yorker playing in the Finals is just different," tulis Mitchell.
Ia menyadari statusnya kini sebagai musuh di rumah sendiri, namun timnya fokus memanfaatkan peluang emas ini.
"You don’t take it for granted. You grew up around it. You grew up a fan of it. And now to be an enemy in it is special, for sure. We played there a few years ago [in the playoffs] and we got whupped. The remaining core guys that are here remember that. So, we have to go out and be ready. It’s an amazing opportunity for us and for me being back home, but we got to go in there and take it," cetus Mitchell.
Dukungan penuh terhadap kepemimpinan Mitchell di dalam lapangan juga disuarakan oleh center Cleveland Cavaliers, Jarrett Allen.
"I hope Don knows this, I’ll follow him into war," ujar Allen.
Allen menegaskan bahwa seluruh elemen tim menaruh kepercayaan penuh pada setiap tindakan dan instruksi yang diberikan Mitchell.
"I’ll trust every single decision that he makes, every single shot that he takes, every single word that he speaks in the locker," tegas Allen.
Selain faktor pemain, sisi historis juga melekat pada kepala pelatih Cavaliers, Kenny Atkinson, yang merupakan putra daerah Long Island.
"On days it was like 10 below zero, my dad would be like, 'We're going out there,'" kenang Atkinson kepada NBA.com pada 2018.
Atkinson menyebut didikan kompetitif dari sang ayah dan saudara-saudaranya di halaman rumah membentuk karakter bermainnya.
"My dad was a big influence. All my brothers played. And there were just wars in the backyard. Three-on-three, four-on-four, around the world. Always competing," kata Atkinson.
Pengalaman masa mudanya berlanjut saat ia menempa diri di program sekolah menengah atas St. Anthony’s.
"What a big-time program it was at that time and really springboarded me to understanding what serious basketball was," ungkap Atkinson.
Ia menyatakan metode disiplin keras dari pelatih terdahulunya menjadi fondasi utama dalam memahami permainan basket.
"Gus was such a tough-nosed coach and disciplined and learned so much of the game," tutur Atkinson.
Kendati memiliki kedekatan emosional dengan Atkinson, pihak alumni sekolah tersebut menyatakan posisi dukungannya melalui unggahan Facebook.
"Of course I will be rooting for the Knicks," tulis Creighton.
Meski begitu, ia tetap menyampaikan apresiasi atas keberhasilan sang pelatih meloloskan Cavaliers ke final wilayah.
"but CONGRATULATIONS to Friar Alum Kenny Atkinson and the Cavs on their defeat of the Pistons," tambah Creighton.
